Why Every Great Beach Town Has One Coffee Shop That Feels Like Home

Ask almost anyone what makes a great beach town, and they'll probably mention the ocean first.

The waves.

The sunshine.

The colorful buildings.

The restaurants.

But if you ask a local, you'll often hear something different.

It's the coffee shops.

Some of my favorite memories in Capitola don't start at the beach.

They start with a warm cup of coffee in my hands.

There is something about slowing down before the rest of the village wakes up. You watch people greeting each other by name, dogs happily pulling their owners toward the beach, surfers carrying boards toward the water, and visitors discovering Capitola for the very first time.

Coffee has a way of making strangers feel like neighbors.

La Marea: A Morning Tradition

If you ask me where I usually start my morning, there's a good chance I'll say La Marea.

One of my favorite things about them is that they make their own syrups in-house. Every season brings something different, and that's part of the fun. There's always a new special to try.

And then there's the food.

Their Farmers Market bagel with whipped herb cream cheese is one of those breakfasts you think about long after you've left.

Their sourdough is made in-house.

The sandwiches are incredible.

The cheese-crusted pizza is something every visitor should experience at least once.

It's the kind of place that makes you want to linger just a little longer.

Mr. Toots: Cozy in Every Season

Then there are those chilly Capitola mornings.

The kind where you pull on your favorite Sunkissed Coconut sweater, wrap your hands around a warm mug, and settle into a comfortable chair.

That's exactly what Mr. Toots feels like.

My favorite drink?

The Honey Lavender Latte.

It's warm, comforting, and somehow fits the atmosphere perfectly.

One of my favorite things isn't just the coffee.

It's the people.

The baristas somehow remember everyone's names.

Everyone seems genuinely happy to be there.

You almost forget you're in a coffee shop.

It feels more like someone's living room.

Castagnola's Café

Directly across from Katalina's Boutique sits another village favorite.

Castagnola's Café.

Danny, the owner, is almost always there with a smile.

Whether you're stopping in for coffee, breakfast, lunch, or even gelato, you'll quickly understand why locals return again and again.

It's one of those places where familiar faces become part of your morning routine.

Sometimes My Office Is Verve

When I really need to focus, I sneak over to Verve Coffee in Pleasure Point.

There's just something about sitting in the corner with a real ceramic coffee mug instead of a paper cup.

I love hearing conversations around me.

Watching the baristas greet their regulars.

Feeling inspired by everyone quietly working.

And I have to mention the avocado toast.

Hands down one of my favorites anywhere.

Fresh avocado.

Pickled onions.

Radishes.

Sea salt.

Olive oil.

Simple.

Beautiful.

Perfect.

Coffee Creates Community

I've realized something over the years.

Coffee isn't really about coffee.

It's about slowing down.

Meeting someone new.

Catching up with an old friend.

Reading a book.

Planning your next adventure.

Or simply sitting quietly while watching Capitola wake up.

That's why I think every great beach town has one coffee shop that feels like home.

Actually…

Capitola is lucky enough to have several.

Kathleen's Tip

If you're visiting Capitola, grab your coffee before 9:00 a.m. and simply walk through the village without an agenda. Some of the best mornings happen when you aren't in a hurry.
