Katalina’s Journal: How to Tell if Clothing Is Good Quality Before You Buy It

Cute Is Important. But Is It Actually Good?

We've all done it.

You see something.

It's adorable.

You immediately want it.

Then you get it home and realize the fabric feels completely different after one wash, the seams are doing something questionable, or the sweater has somehow transformed into a shape that no human body has ever been.

Not ideal. 😂

So how can you tell whether clothing is good quality before you buy it?

Welcome back to Katalina's Journal.

Today we're sharing some of the things we look at when we're shopping for Katalina's—and things you can look for when you're shopping for yourself.

Because price doesn't always equal quality.

A label doesn't always equal quality.

And even where something was made doesn't automatically guarantee quality.

The individual garment matters.

1. Start With the Fabric

Touch it.

Seriously.

This is one of the biggest advantages of shopping in person.

How does the fabric feel against your skin?

Does it feel comfortable?

Does it feel substantial enough for what the garment is supposed to be?

Does it have a nice drape?

Is it already pilling while it's still on the rack?

And most importantly:

Would you actually want this touching your body for eight hours?

Because an itchy sweater you can't wait to take off isn't a good purchase no matter how cute it looked on Instagram.

2. Check the Fabric Label

We love beautiful fabrics, but there isn't one fiber that's automatically “good” and another that's automatically “bad.”

Cotton.

Linen.

Wool.

Viscose.

Polyester.

Acrylic.

Blends.

They all have different properties and different purposes.

What matters is whether the fabric makes sense for the garment and for your lifestyle.

Linen wrinkles.

That's part of linen.

Some knits require more careful washing.

Some fabrics are easier for travel.

Some are better for hot climates.

Understanding what you're buying helps you decide whether you'll actually enjoy owning it.

3. Look at the Seams

Flip it over.

Look inside.

You don't have to be a seamstress to notice when something looks questionable.

Are the seams relatively straight and secure?

Are there loose threads everywhere?

Does the stitching look consistent?

Does the fabric pull around the seams?

Does anything already look like it's separating?

Clothing doesn't need to look absolutely perfect under a microscope.

But if something already looks like it's struggling before you've even worn it...

Pay attention.

4. Look at How the Garment Hangs

This is a big one for us.

A beautiful garment should work with the fabric it's made from.

Some fabrics are supposed to be structured.

Others are supposed to drape and move.

This is something we particularly love about many of the Made in Italy styles we bring into Katalina's.

A flowy pant should FLOW.

An easy knit should fall nicely on the body.

A relaxed top should look intentionally relaxed—not simply shapeless.

How a garment moves can completely change how expensive or polished it looks.

5. Try It On

We know.

We say this constantly.

But TRY IT ON. 😂

Quality isn't only about construction.

Fit matters too.

Something can be beautifully made and still be completely wrong for your body.

And something you thought looked strange on the hanger can suddenly make perfect sense once you put it on.

Move around.

Sit down.

Raise your arms.

Walk.

Look at it from the side.

Look at the back.

Would you actually feel comfortable wearing it?

That's what matters.

6. Check the Details

Little details can tell you a lot.

Look at:

Buttons.

Zippers.

Hardware.

Pockets.

Hems.

Embroidery.

Lining.

Closures.

Pattern alignment where relevant.

You don't need every garment to have elaborate construction.

A simple tank should be simple.

But the details that ARE there should function properly.

7. Think About What Happens After You Wash It

Before buying something, check the care instructions.

Because there is absolutely no point buying a garment that requires a level of maintenance you know you're never going to provide. 😂

If something requires hand washing and you're a:

“Everything goes into the washing machine and we hope for the best”

kind of person...

Take that into consideration.

Quality and longevity also depend on how you care for your clothing.

Does Made in Italy Automatically Mean Better Quality?

No.

And we think this is important to say.

We LOVE our Made in Italy clothing.

We carry it because we find beautiful silhouettes, fabrics, textures and details that fit the Katalina's aesthetic.

But “Made in Italy” by itself isn't a magic guarantee that every garment is superior.

We still evaluate the individual piece.

How does it feel?

How is it constructed?

How does it fit?

What's the fabric?

Would our customers wear it?

Would WE wear it?

That's how we choose.

Is Expensive Clothing Always Better Quality?

Also no.

Price can reflect materials, construction, labor, brand positioning, distribution and many other factors.

But a higher price tag doesn't automatically mean a garment will work better for you.

And inexpensive doesn't automatically mean disposable.

Instead of asking only:

“Is this expensive?”

Try asking:

“Is this worth the price to ME?”

That's a much better question.

What About Sweaters?

Sweaters deserve a little extra attention.

Feel the knit.

Check the seams.

Look at the shape.

Think about whether the sweater will work with things you already own.

And READ THE CARE LABEL.

Please.

Some knits need more love than others.

If you find a sweater that's comfortable, flattering and works with your denim, dresses and pants?

That's the sweater you're actually going to wear.

What About Basics?

Quality basics don't necessarily need to be expensive.

They need to work.

This is why we love Nikibiki.

A basic tank can become one of the most useful things in your wardrobe because you're constantly layering it underneath other pieces.

The best basic is the one that fits well, feels good and comes back out of the laundry only to immediately get worn again.

Don't Forget Accessories

The same idea applies outside clothing.

If you're buying something you'll use constantly, pay attention to construction and functionality.

This is particularly important with handbags.

How does the hardware feel?

Are the straps comfortable?

Does the size work for what you carry?

Can you actually access your phone without excavating the entire bag?

This is one of the reasons we love Hammitt handbags—the combination of leather, distinctive hardware and functional designs makes them pieces our customers can actually USE.

Because beautiful is great.

Beautiful AND useful is better.

Our Favorite Quality Test: Would You Buy It Again?

Imagine you've owned the piece for six months.

You've worn it.

Washed it.

Styled it several ways.

Now imagine it disappeared from your closet.

Would you buy it again?

That's the kind of clothing we're looking for.

Not the piece that photographs beautifully once and then lives untouched on a hanger.

The piece you miss when it's in the laundry.

How We Choose Clothing for Katalina's

When we're buying for Katalina's Boutique, we're not simply looking at what's trending.

We're thinking about our customers.

Does it feel good?

Can you actually wear it?

Can you style it more than one way?

Does the price make sense?

Does it fit the Katalina's aesthetic?

Would we be excited to show it to you?

Sometimes that means a beautiful Milio Milano Made in Italy piece.

Sometimes it's a Nikibiki basic you'll wear constantly.

Sometimes it's the cozy sweater you refuse to take off.

Sometimes it's a Hammitt bag you'll carry for years.

Different pieces serve different purposes.

Shop Smarter, Not Just More

You don't need a closet overflowing with clothes.

You need clothes you LIKE wearing.

Before buying your next piece, slow down for approximately 30 seconds.

Feel it.

Look at the seams.

Check the fabric.

Read the care instructions.

Try it on.

Think of three ways you'd wear it.

And ask yourself:

“Do I actually love this?”

If the answer is yes?

Now we're talking.
