Katalina’s Journal: What to Wear When It’s Hot During the Day & Cold at Night
The Outfit Problem We Deal With Every Fall
You leave the house and it's warm.
A few hours later, you're freezing.
So you either spend the afternoon carrying around the giant sweater you didn't need...
Or you're out at night wishing you had brought literally anything with sleeves.
Sound familiar?
Welcome back to Katalina's Journal, because today we're solving one of the most annoying transitional-weather problems:
What do you wear when it's hot during the day and cold at night?
This is especially relevant around here because both Capitola, California and Scottsdale, Arizona have their own versions of unpredictable fall dressing.
The answer isn't packing an entire second outfit.
It's layering smarter.
1. Start With a Tank You'd Actually Wear Alone
Your bottom layer matters because there's a very good chance it'll become your entire outfit during the warmest part of the day.
This is exactly why we love a Nikibiki tank or cami.
Instead of treating your tank like something that's only supposed to hide underneath a sweater, choose one that looks good on its own.
Pair it with denim, wide-leg pants or a skirt.
Then your layer can come on and off without ruining the outfit.

2. Add a Lightweight Cardigan
We literally just talked about cardigans yesterday for a reason.
They're one of the easiest transitional pieces you can own.
Wear one open over a fitted tank.
Drape it over your shoulders when you don't need it.
Tie it around your waist if the style works.
Then put it on once temperatures drop.
You're not carrying around a giant winter coat all day.
And you're also not freezing at dinner.
Everybody wins.

3. Try a Lightweight Sweater Over Your Shoulders
This is one of our favorite styling tricks because the sweater actually becomes part of the outfit before you're even wearing it.
Start with a tank or tee.
Throw the sweater loosely over your shoulders.
You've instantly added texture and another color to the outfit.
Then when it gets cold?
Put it on.
Fashion AND practicality.
We love when those two decide to cooperate.
4. Wide-Leg Pants Are Perfect for Transitional Weather
This is another reason we're obsessed with them.
A lightweight wide-leg pant gives you more coverage than shorts without feeling like you're dressed for winter.
Pair them with a fitted tank during the day.
Add a cardigan or sweater at night.
Our Made in Italy wide-leg pants are especially easy to build this type of outfit around because they give you that relaxed, effortless silhouette without requiring a complicated top.

5. Don't Put Away Your Dresses
Your summer dresses aren't finished yet.
Instead of packing them away, start layering them.
Wear your dress during the warm part of the day.
Bring a cardigan or lightweight sweater.
Add a denim jacket if that's more your style.
Change your shoes as the season moves along.
You just extended the life of something already hanging in your closet.
We LOVE that.

6. Build Around a Matching Set
A matching set is another great transitional option because you can adjust it depending on the temperature.
Wear the complete set.
Add a sweater.
Wear the top with denim.
Pair the bottom with a tank.
Depending on the set, you can create multiple outfits from the same two pieces.
Which means less standing in front of your closet saying:
“I have nothing to wear.”

7. Keep Your Layer With You
Here's the most obvious advice that somehow we all ignore:
Bring the sweater.
Even if you don't think you're going to need it.
Especially in Capitola.
You know what's worse than carrying around a sweater for an hour?
Being freezing for four hours because you left it at home.
Throw it over your shoulders, keep it in the car or carry it with you.
Future you will be grateful.
What to Wear in Capitola During Fall
Capitola is basically the perfect example of why transitional dressing matters.
You can have a gorgeous afternoon near the beach and then feel a completely different temperature once the sun starts going down.
Our easy Capitola formula:
Tank + denim or wide-leg pants + lightweight sweater + comfortable shoes + crossbody bag.
And this weekend is the Capitola Beach Festival, so if you're spending Saturday or Sunday walking between Capitola Beach and the Village, layers are absolutely the move.

What to Wear in Scottsdale During Fall
Scottsdale has the opposite problem.
We're READY for fall clothes.
The weather may not be. 😂
Instead of forcing heavy sweaters while it's still hot, start introducing fall through color and lightweight layers.
Chocolate.
Camel.
Wine.
Olive.
Cream.
Denim.
Wear a tank or lightweight top during the day and bring a cardigan for restaurants, air conditioning and later evenings.
You can look like fall without actually suffering for it.
Your Handbag Can Help the Outfit Feel Like Fall Too
When it's too warm for heavy layers, accessories can shift your wardrobe into the next season.
A beautiful leather handbag instantly brings more texture and richness to a simple outfit.
This is one reason we love Hammitt handbags for transitional dressing.
Tank + denim + leather bag + sweater over your shoulders?
That's fall.
Even if Scottsdale's thermometer disagrees. 😂
