🌊 The Katalina's Journal A collection of stories celebrating California coastal living, timeless style, remarkable people, and the memories we make along the way. The Kind of Place Where Strangers Become Friends
The Kind of Place Where Strangers Become Friends
One of the things I've loved most about my stay at Chaminade isn't something you'll find listed on the website.
It's the people.
When you first arrive at a resort, you expect beautiful views, comfortable rooms, and great food.
What you don't always expect is to leave with new friendships.
That's exactly what's happened here.
Mornings That Feel Different
Each morning seems to start a little slower here.
Coffee tastes better.
The air feels fresher.
Instead of rushing to check another email, I've found myself sitting by the fireplace with my laptop, enjoying the quiet before the day begins.
Even though it's July and the mornings have started off cloudy, the weather has been absolutely beautiful by the afternoon.
It's reminded me once again that the Santa Cruz area has a way of surprising you. The marine layer rolls in, then the sunshine arrives, and suddenly you're spending the afternoon outside wondering why you ever worried about the forecast.
Conversations Around the Pool
One afternoon I decided to spend some time by the pool.
What surprised me most wasn't the heated water.
It was how welcoming everyone was.
I met several retired members who love spending time at Chaminade and shared stories about why they continue coming back year after year.
Then I met other guests who were staying at the resort, and before I knew it, we were talking like we'd known each other much longer than a day.
The next morning I even met one of the women again for breakfast.
That's the kind of place Chaminade feels like.
Friendly.
Relaxed.
Comfortable.
Somehow it brings people together.
Breakfast Worth Waking Up For
Breakfast has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the day.
Leila took wonderful care of us and made us feel right at home from the moment we sat down.
Everyone kept telling me I had to try the salmon lox bagel, and now I understand why.
The crispy bacon was perfectly cooked.
The breakfast potatoes were packed with flavor.
The French toast was everything comfort food should be.
Tomorrow I'm already planning to try the quesabirria tacos because apparently they're another guest favorite.
I love when a menu has so many things you're excited to come back for.
Dinner That Keeps You Coming Back
Dinner has been just as memorable.
The burger topped with bacon jam was rich, savory, and unlike any burger I've had before.
The braised short ribs with mashed potatoes were just as incredible the second time around.
Tender.
Comforting.
Absolutely worth ordering again.
And then...
Dessert.
I'm still not sure what the sticky caramel creation is officially called, but I do know this...
If it's on the menu...
Order it.
You'll thank me later.
Evenings Around the Fire
One of my favorite discoveries happened completely by accident.
Near the pool are cozy little fire pits.
Next to them?
Bundles of wood waiting for guests to build their own fire.
How fun is that?
There's something special about ending the evening around a crackling fire, talking with family, friends, or even people you've just met while enjoying the cool mountain air.
It's such a thoughtful touch that makes the experience feel even more memorable.
More Than a Resort
I've realized something during this trip.
The reason I extended my stay wasn't because of one meal.
Or one room.
Or even one beautiful view.
It was because Chaminade has a way of making you feel like you belong.
Sometimes that's exactly what we're searching for without even realizing it.
Kathleen's Tip
Don't spend your entire stay rushing from one activity to the next. Set aside an afternoon to enjoy the pool, start a fire pit in the evening, and strike up a conversation with someone nearby. You might leave with more than just beautiful memories.
